We are well into January and that means that on average a quarter of people have already gotten frustrated and given up on their new year resolution. It doesn’t have to be this way though, below are my top 3 tips for creating goals that are easy to stick to and achieve. Whether your goal for 2023 is to lose weight, stop smoking, start managing stress, break a bad habit, or add a positive habit, the way you set up your goal changes how likely you are to succeed.
1) Make it Positive
Are you setting goals for yourself that sound something like these: “I want to lose 20 pounds by Summer”, “I need to stop stressing so much”, “I’d like to quit smoking”? All of these goals are focusing on what you don’t want, instead of what you do. Stating your goal in the positive changes your focus to the outcome you do want. Try saying “I want to be a non-smoker” or ” I want to live a smoke-free life.”
2) Put it in the Present-Tense
“I weigh 130 pounds” is a positive and present-tense way for someone who weighs 155lbs and wants to lose weight with hypnosis to say, “I want to lose 25 pounds.” Someone who has fears when writing tests might say “When I sit down to write an exam I am relaxed and answer the questions in a calm and confident way.” By stating your intention as though it has already happened it becomes easy for your mind to accept it as true, and then act accordingly.
3) See it Clearly
Visualizing the outcome of your goal helps motivate you as you take action to make the vision a reality. Ask yourself, what is the benefit you get once you reach your goal? How will your life look different? Will you fit into a smaller size of clothing? Will people tell you how good you look? Will you stop smelling like cigarette smoke? Will you feel more self-confident? When picturing your outcome make sure to include what you will see, hear and feel once you achieve your goal. Keep this vision front of mind and use it to guide the steps you need to take to get your goal.
